A criminal tribunal in Abu Dhabi sent two individuals to prison after finding them guilty of disrupting public order by mounting unauthorised emergency warning devices on a private automobile.

Judges gave the first offender half a year behind bars, a monetary penalty of Dh100,000, and ruled that the car used in the violation be taken away. He had been caught operating the vehicle on a public thoroughfare while it displayed flashing lights meant solely for approved rescue and law-enforcement units, and he held no valid paperwork allowing such use.

The co-defendant was held responsible for helping to put the warning apparatus in place despite not having any licence to carry out that kind of work.

Legal papers stated the matter concerned the prohibited attachment of signalling gear that regulations reserve exclusively for officially recognised emergency transport.

The decision signals the country's tough posture on anyone who fits or operates emergency-style equipment without going through proper channels, a practice authorities warn can jeopardise the safety of other road users and disturb traffic flow.
