Daniel Kinahan, alleged leader of one of Ireland's most prominent criminal networks, was arrested in Dubai on Wednesday, apnews.com reports, citing Irish media.
Ireland's national police force, the Garda Síochána, confirmed that an Irish man in his late 40s had been detained under a warrant issued by Irish courts in connection with alleged serious organised crime offences. "We are steadfast in our determination that we would pursue those allegedly involved in serious organised criminal activity, wherever they go," the force said in a statement.
Dubai Police separately announced the arrest of an "Irish fugitive for his alleged role in an international organised crime network," without naming Kinahan directly. Ireland's national broadcaster RTE confirmed the arrested individual was Kinahan.
The High Court in Dublin had previously identified Kinahan, a resident of the United Arab Emirates, as a senior figure in a gang engaged in international drug trafficking and firearms offences.
The Kinahan cartel's long-running feud with the rival Hutch gang has been linked to 18 killings in Ireland since 2015. A pivotal moment came in 2016, when David Byrne, a Kinahan associate, was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Dublin. Authorities believe Kinahan was the intended target of that attack.
Kinahan subsequently relocated from Ireland to Spain and later to Dubai. He was a co-founder of boxing management company MTK Global and has been photographed with then-heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. He was also involved in efforts to arrange a proposed all-British superfight between Fury and Anthony Joshua, a bout that was never staged.
In 2022, the United States government offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the financial dismantling of the Kinahan organisation or the arrest and conviction of its leaders.
