A 23-year-old British social media personality stands accused of fatally stabbing a man in Dubai and now faces the possibility of capital punishment under Emirati law.
Brooke George, originally from Gravesend in Kent, was taken into custody at Dubai International Airport as she attempted to board a flight back to the United Kingdom. Authorities have charged her with premeditated murder in connection with the death of William Treeby, a 26-year-old also from Kent.
According to advocacy organization Detained in Dubai, George first connected with Treeby through Facebook and later travelled to the United Arab Emirates to meet him in person. Her initial week-long stay was reportedly uneventful, but during a subsequent visit, his conduct allegedly shifted drastically. George claims Treeby became controlling and abusive while intoxicated at a residence in Jumeirah Village.
The influencer contends that after being struck repeatedly, she managed to contact relatives and arranged an emergency return flight. When she went back to the apartment to retrieve her passport, she alleges Treeby assaulted her again, punching her hard in the face. Fearing for her life, she says she seized a kitchen knife within reach and stabbed him in self-defense before fleeing.
George was apprehended before she could leave the country. She is currently being held at Bur Dubai Police Station. Her family has raised additional concerns, alleging she was compelled to undress in front of male officers, denied access to a lawyer, and unable to follow legal proceedings because of language barriers.
Her mother, Thereza George, described her daughter as "absolutely terrified" during a phone call after the incident, noting one eye was badly swollen and beginning to close. "I have never seen my daughter so frightened in my life," she stated.
Radha Stirling of Detained in Dubai has called on UAE authorities to provide George with protection, medical attention, legal counsel, and immediate consular support from Britain. Stirling emphasized that investigators must also examine whether George was a victim of serious violence rather than treating her solely as a suspect. She further urged authorities to look into whether other women may have been targeted by Treeby.
The case highlights broader worries about young women and influencers being drawn to the emirate under misleading promises of luxury lifestyles or paid opportunities.
