Officers in the emirate of Dubai have placed an Irish citizen under arrest after receiving a formal legal request from authorities in his homeland, according to ThePrint.

The force announced on Wednesday that they had apprehended a fugitive from Ireland suspected of directing a criminal collective that carried out unlawful acts across borders in the country of origin. The official communication refrained from identifying the individual by name.

Multiple news organisations based in Ireland, among them the national public-service broadcaster and a leading daily newspaper, named the suspect as Daniel Kinahan. The accusations against him reportedly stem from a long-running violent dispute between rival factions on the island.

Washington had previously designated Kinahan as a principal figure within a notorious trafficking ring, placing a bounty of five million dollars on information that would bring the organisation's command structure to justice. American financial-crime officials drew parallels between the outfit and other infamous global criminal enterprises, noting that the network had repeatedly operated out of Dubai.

In 2021, a solicitor acting on Kinahan's behalf informed the British Broadcasting Corporation that the businessman possessed no prior convictions and rejected allegations of masterminding illegal operations. At the time of the latest development, news agency Reuters said it could not obtain a response from the suspect's representatives.

The operation demonstrates the continuing collaboration between police services in the Gulf state and European counterparts in dismantling cross-border criminal structures.
