Dubai Police Warn Residents About Fake Apps Stealing Bank Data
The electronic crimes division at Dubai Police has alerted residents to a growing threat from counterfeit applications downloaded outside official platforms. These programs can contain harmful code that enables criminals to infiltrate mobile devices, extract sensitive personal details, and drain funds from financial accounts.
In an awareness campaign, the cybersecurity unit explained how scammers design tempting software aligned with people's interests — covering areas like finance, parcel tracking, or system updates. "Victims are lured into tapping download links, which traps them," officials explained.
After installation, perpetrators can quietly access handsets and siphon off information and funds without the owner's awareness.
Authorities emphasized several protective measures: restrict downloads to verified app stores, keep passwords and PINs confidential, install reputable antivirus tools, enable transaction notifications from banks, and steer clear of dubious hyperlinks.
The division noted that public vigilance serves as the primary shield against digital deception. Anyone encountering suspicious activity should report it promptly through the Dubai Police mobile application, by dialing 901, or using the dedicated eCrime reporting portal.
