A 70-year-old Hungarian man convicted in his home country of influence peddling was taken into custody in Dubai on 11 May and flown back to Budapest on 6 June to begin serving a three-year prison sentence.

The suspect, identified in Hungarian media as R. László, had fled abroad rather than report to prison after a final court ruling in early 2025. Pest County Police, Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI) and the International Law-Enforcement Co-operation Centre (NEBEK) worked together to trace him to the United Arab Emirates.

According to the Hungarian National Police, investigators from Pest County gathered intelligence that placed the fugitive in the Emirates. With help from local counterparts and the KR NNI’s fugitive-tracking unit, officers detained him in Dubai.

On 6 June, NEBEK staff escorted the man from Dubai through Vienna to the Hungarian capital, where he was placed in custody to serve his sentence.

The suspect has a long record of involvement in high-profile criminal proceedings in Hungary. His name surfaced in the 1990s oil-affair investigations, and he was one of the defendants in the so-called Kecskemét mafia trial, which resulted in a 12-year prison term. He was also prosecuted in a case linked to receiving stolen goods, dubbed the “perfume affair” by the press. Hungarian media have frequently described him as a leading figure in the country’s underworld.

The case illustrates that international police co-operation can reach suspects even when they travel thousands of kilometres from the country where they are wanted.
