Reported Greek Underworld Leader 'Edik' Said to Be Detained in UAE
A man nicknamed "Edik," also known as "Foni" (meaning "Voice"), is believed to be held by security forces in the United Arab Emirates. He is said to head a criminal network consisting mainly of Greeks with roots in former Soviet republics. The reported detention in Dubai has not been formally confirmed by officials, Cyprus Inform reported.
Athens sent a related document after learning of the situation but had not yet gotten a response. People close to the matter say he has stopped appearing at his usual spots in Dubai.
The network he allegedly runs is said to control the smuggling of tobacco goods. Its members face accusations of extortion, abduction, explosions, torching buildings, beatings, threats, and targeted killings against rivals in the so-called Greek Mafia.
He is believed to have run the group's affairs from Dubai, keeping tight command and issuing detailed orders from afar. Officers with the Hellenic Police say this long-distance leadership reflects an advanced setup, with a rigid chain of command and a plan centered on spreading fear, pressure, and brutality. Those same officers say his guidance allowed the group to keep growing and succeeding in its unlawful operations throughout Greece.
