A man has been found guilty of burglary after breaking into the residence of an elderly woman who recognized him from their shared village.

A court has delivered a guilty verdict in a burglary case involving the home of an elderly woman.

Mark Willock was convicted following a trial without a jury, presided over by Justice John Spencer. The judge dismissed the accused's claim that someone else had committed the break-in and that the octogenarian complainant was not telling the truth.

The offence occurred on January 9, 2023, when Willock forced his way into the woman's house. She told the court she knew who he was right away, as he had been raised in the same community where she has long lived.

The victim described hearing rattling at her rear and kitchen entrances. Believing it might be her son, who had come by many times before, she called out. Receiving no reply, she got up, illuminated the corridor leading to the kitchen, and spotted Willock an instant before he covered his face with a mask.

Sentencing for the convicted man has been set for June 26.
