U.S. Visitor Fatally Injured During Equine Excursion on Antiguan Coast
A traveller from the American Midwest has died after sustaining critical injuries during a holiday on the Caribbean island of Antigua.
The victim, identified as Karen Johannsen of Wisconsin, was attacked on 19 December while participating in a guided horse ride along a coastal path, according to a statement issued by the island's constabulary and reported by WFLX.
Investigators say an assailant came up to Johannsen and inflicted a heavy blow to her skull with an object that has yet to be identified. The force of the impact caused devastating trauma to her head.
She was first rushed to Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where clinicians worked to stabilise her condition. Because her wounds were so severe, she was transferred by medical aircraft on 21 December to a hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, closer to her loved ones.
Despite these efforts, Johannsen succumbed to her injuries the following Friday, about seven days after the initial blow.
Constabulary officials have placed one individual under arrest. While the detainee's name has not been released to the media, a relative of the deceased informed WMTV that the person apprehended had once been romantically involved with Johannsen.
The victim's relatives were proprietors of a long-standing horticultural business in Madison that operated for half a century before closing its doors in 2013.
The island's law enforcement agency is actively pursuing the inquiry and has not yet announced any formal charges.
