Wisconsin woman dies after attack during horseback ride on Antigua beach

A Wisconsin woman has died following an attack on a beach in Antigua earlier this month, weau.com reports, citing confirmation from the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.

Karen Johannsen was on a horseback trail ride along an Antigua beach on Dec. 19 when a man struck her on the head with an unknown object. She was taken to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where she received treatment for severe head trauma.

Two days later, on Dec. 21, Johannsen was airlifted to University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. She died there on Dec. 26, a week after sustaining her injuries.

A man is in custody, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda confirmed. The force has not released his name. Johannsen's sister told WMTV that the suspect is an ex-boyfriend.

Johannsen was the daughter of the owners of Johannsen's Greenhouse, a Madison institution that operated for 50 years before closing in 2013.

The case remains under investigation.
