St James resident admits to keeping unlicensed gun and bullets
A resident of St James has confessed before the High Court to holding a firearm and bullets without the necessary legal paperwork, and will now face assessment ahead of sentencing.
Inyah Iroyal Jones entered guilty pleas to two separate charges when he appeared before Justice Pamela Beckles. The first was for possessing a Taurus .380 ACP pistol without a licence, and the second for having four rounds of ammunition without a permit.
Prosecutor Maya Kellman, serving in the role of Acting Senior State Counsel, outlined how the case began. Officers received information that someone carrying a weapon had run into a woman's house. With a warrant in hand, they went inside and found Jones in one of the bedrooms. A search of his body turned up nothing, but when officers lifted the mattress, they discovered the gun hidden underneath.
Jones accepted that the weapon was his. He explained to detectives that he had picked it up, fled into the home, and concealed it below the bed. He also voiced regret, stating he was sorry and had not wanted to cause problems for the family living there.
Attorney Kyle Walkes is handling his defence. Jones is scheduled to appear again on July 28, when Justice Beckles will have a pre-sentence report and custody record available to guide the final punishment.
