Barbados man confesses to keeping unlicensed gun and bullets

A man living in St James has admitted before the island's High Court that he possessed a handgun and bullets without the necessary legal paperwork.

Inyah Iroyal Jones appeared before Justice Pamela Beckles and entered a guilty plea. He acknowledged having a Taurus .380 ACP pistol and four rounds of ammunition, neither of which he held valid permits for.

The case began when officers received word that someone carrying a firearm had dashed into a woman's house. Prosecutor Maya Kellman, serving in an acting senior state counsel role, explained that police obtained permission to search the property. Inside, they came across Jones in one of the bedrooms. A check of his clothing turned up nothing, but when officers lifted the mattress, they uncovered the concealed weapon.

When questioned, Jones took responsibility for the gun. He explained to detectives that he had stumbled upon it and rushed inside to stash it beneath the bed. He also voiced regret, saying he was sorry and had not intended to bring trouble to the household.

Kyle Walkes is acting as Jones's legal representative. The matter has been put over until July 28, when the court will receive a pre-sentence report and custody record to help determine the appropriate penalty.
