Barbados man admits to keeping unlicensed gun under mattress

A resident of St James has pleaded guilty to charges of holding an unlicensed handgun together with ammunition, and will now be evaluated ahead of sentencing.

Inyah Iroyal Jones appeared in the High Court before Justice Pamela Beckles, where he admitted to possessing a Taurus .380 ACP pistol and four rounds of bullets without the necessary authorisation.

Prosecutor Maya Kellman explained that law enforcement had obtained authorisation to search a dwelling after a report that an armed individual had entered the property. Inside, officers located Jones in one of the sleeping quarters. A search of the bedding area revealed the firearm concealed underneath.

When questioned, Jones accepted ownership of the weapon. He informed detectives that he had picked up the item and hidden it beneath the bed after entering the premises. He also expressed regret, stating he had not intended to cause difficulties for the household.

The presiding judge has requested a background assessment and prison record review before determining an appropriate penalty. Jones, whose legal representative is Kyle Walkes, is due back in court on 28 July.
