A French military vessel stopped a boat carrying narcotics in waters near the Caribbean and later transferred the people on board to law enforcement in Barbados. The haul from the operation totaled around 678 kilograms of cocaine.

Catherine Vautrin, who holds the portfolio for France's armed forces, shared news of the bust on a social media platform this past Thursday. The action aligns with broader efforts by Washington and other capitals to clamp down on the movement of illegal substances through the Caribbean and nearby Latin American zones.

Paris controls several overseas territories in these parts of the world and has been pursuing a harder line against the narcotics trade of late. Findings published in December by France's national drug observatory revealed that cocaine has displaced cannabis as the most prevalent illicit drug consumed within French borders.

Gang violence linked to the narcotics economy has been climbing in France. On a visit to Colombia — the globe's top producer of the white powder — Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot put forward a wide-ranging plan to counter the sharp growth in trafficking throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and an expanding European market.

The French government is additionally pressing for a punitive sanctions regime at the European Union level to confront the issue.
