A jury unanimously declared a St James resident guilty of holding and planning to distribute almost 38 kilogrammes of marijuana concealed inside machinery at the Bridgetown Port in 2019.

A nine-member jury has delivered a unanimous guilty verdict against a man from West Terrace Gardens in St James for drug-related offences. Eric Astor Omar Gibson was convicted in the No. 5 Supreme Court of holding 37.9 kilogrammes of cannabis and taking steps to distribute the controlled substance during the first week of February 2019.

The narcotics were uncovered by workers at the Bridgetown Port hidden within a compressor and a pair of battery chargers. The discovery took place during routine checks at the facility.

Justice Pamela Beckles requested reports on the defendant's time in custody and background before imposing punishment. The prosecution was handled by State Counsel Maya Kellman, while the accused was represented in court by lawyers Zaria Taylor and Elan Greenidge.

Proceedings will reconvene later this month, with the next date set for July 23. Until then, the convicted man has been allowed to remain free on bail.
