Greenfield man gets six years and nine months for Garden Land firearm shooting

St Michael man sentenced to additional six years and nine months over 2020 Garden Land shooting

A 26-year-old St Michael man already serving a custodial sentence for an ammunition offence has received an additional six years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to discharging a firearm and endangering life, barbadostoday.bb reports.

Stephon Davidson Freeman, of Greenfield, St Michael, appeared before Justice Carlisle Greaves at the No. 3 Supreme Court and admitted to firing a weapon in Garden Land, St Michael — a public place — on November 24, 2020, in a manner that placed Kezra Lewis Wilson in danger of death or serious bodily harm. He also admitted to using a firearm without holding a valid licence.

Freeman declined to make a statement to the court.

What happened in Garden Land

Acting Senior State Counsel Anastacia McMeo-Boyce told the court that Wilson was sitting in a gallery in conversation with three other persons when he looked up and saw a man in a dark-coloured shirt and short pants running toward them. Wilson alerted the others, and moments later they heard loud explosions, causing them to flee into the residence.

Further explosions were heard as they ran into the backyard, before the shooting stopped. A subsequent check of the property revealed several bullet holes in the house. Investigations led authorities to Freeman.

Sentencing calculation

Justice Greaves noted that the maximum sentence for a firearm use offence is 12 years. Because the matter constituted a subsequent conviction, he set the starting point higher — at 15 years. A one-third discount was then applied, after which time was deducted for delay and two years and three months for Freeman's remand time on each count, bringing the final term to six years and nine months. The sentences on each count are to run concurrently.
