Supreme Court sets January trial for St John man in child sex case

Jeremiah Isiah Butcher, who hails from Venture in the parish of St John, appeared in the No. 5 Supreme Court where Justice Pamela Beckles read out accusations that he sexually abused two minors. The defendant rejected all claims.

According to court documents, one offence supposedly took place while the first victim was either nine or ten years old, sometime during the whole of 2015. The second purported victim was 12 when another unlawful encounter allegedly happened between the start of 2015 and 20 April 2018.

The young woman bringing the accusations attended the session and broke down while speaking. She informed the judge that the trauma continues to haunt her, using the words "still affecting me". Yet she remained uncertain about whether she wished to pursue the litigation further.

After hearing this, Justice Beckles mandated professional counselling for the woman. Her matter was then put off until 26 January, when evidence will be heard. The presiding judge indicated the future direction would become clearer on that day.
