A resident of New Orleans has been sent to Dodds Prison after jurors convicted him of keeping an unlicensed pistol and ammunition. The eight-to-one decision followed a trial over a 2022 incident in Bush Hall.
D'Nairo Greaves, who lives on Third Avenue in the New Orleans district, was found guilty of holding a '19 Gen 4' 9mm Luger handgun without authorisation, together with 14 rounds of ammunition lacking the required permit. The events in question took place on 20 July 2022.
Prosecutors told the court that officers approached a property in Bush Hall and spotted Greaves at a window holding a weapon. He allegedly fled from the window and was later apprehended in the yard, while the firearm was discovered on the living-room floor.
Taking the stand without being sworn, Greaves offered a different account. He said he had gone to the address to pick up a companion who was being sought by police, intending to take him to a lawyer. However, he arrived too late for the office to be open. He claimed he was waiting in the workshop when a loud bang occurred and two masked, armed intruders burst in shouting that they were police.
According to his testimony, he was handcuffed alongside his friend and another individual, then led into the house where officers showed him the weapon. He insisted he had no connection to it.
"I told him I know nothing about that gun. I am not a police officer or soldier or nothing like that," he told the court. "I honestly have no idea, knowledge or anything about that gun. I was never by no window with no gun, and I could swear to God and in front of all these people here that I am innocent and had nothing to do with that gun."
Defence counsel Shadia Simpson asked the judge to order a pre-sentence report. Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell set the next hearing for 18 September. Acting Senior State Counsel Paul Prescod led the prosecution.
