The Barbados Police Service launched a multi-day drug disposal operation on Friday, incinerating 3,490 kilograms of confiscated narcotics with an estimated street value of $56 million, barbadostoday.bb reports. It is the force's first major drug destruction exercise of the year.
Police spokesman PC Damian Farmer confirmed the scope of the haul at the start of the exercise. "We will be destroying 3,490 kilograms of narcotics, which include cannabis, cocaine, and other opioids with an estimated street value of $56m," Farmer said.
The drugs were gathered through multiple channels: proactive police investigations, routine maritime and border seizures, and legal proceedings that had run their course in the courts. Officials described the haul as the product of months of investigative work and joint interdiction efforts by local security forces.
Oversight of the disposal was assigned to Senior Superintendent Derek Bobb. "The process this morning is supervised by Senior Superintendent Derek Bobb, and he has with him other members of the Barbados Police Service, the Barbados Defense Force, as well as personnel from the Barbados government forensics lab," Farmer said.
The forensics laboratory's role was to verify the chemical identity of each substance before incineration or other methods of destruction were applied. Personnel from the Barbados Defense Force provided an armed escort throughout the exercise, ensuring security during the high-value disposal.
Authorities stated that removing the substances permanently from circulation was the primary objective, preventing any possibility of the seized contraband re-entering the street supply. The destruction exercise is expected to continue through the end of the week.
