Court Postpones Punishment for Man Who Killed Two Women
A St Michael resident who confessed to ending the lives of two females will have to wait until mid-July before a judge decides how long he will spend behind bars, because key health professionals have not yet delivered their findings.
Demetrico Ricardo Layne, from Graham's Alley on Nelson Street, previously acknowledged responsibility for the death of Olivia Cecelia Carter in late July 2020, and for killing Odith Nicole Henriques in early August 2021. Investigators recorded his account that he used strangulation to kill each woman following intimate contact.
On Friday, Layne appeared in the No. 4 Supreme Court before Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell. The hearing could not proceed because experts had not yet submitted their reports on his mental condition, personality profile, and conduct patterns. These documents are required before the court can determine an appropriate penalty.
The case was therefore rescheduled for July 14.
Attorney Leslie Cargil-Straker is defending Layne, while the state is represented by Counsel Paul Prescod.
