St Michael killer must wait longer for punishment hearing
Demetrico Ricardo Layne, who admitted killing two women in 2020 and 2021, will not be sentenced until 25 September because he still needs to be examined by a psychologist.
St Michael killer must wait longer for punishment hearing
A city resident who took responsibility for the deaths of two females will remain in custody for at least another two months while authorities arrange for an expert to study his mental state.
Demetrico Ricardo Layne resides on Graham’s Alley along Nelson Street in St Michael. He acknowledged guilt in the slaying of Olivia Cecelia Carter on 27 July 2020, and also in the homicide of Odith Nicole Henriques on 2 August 2021, according to Barbados Today.
Carter perished on the property of the derelict Lauriston structure in Collymore Rock. Henriques, who held Jamaican citizenship and was 44 years old, was discovered unclothed behind a vacant dwelling at Graham’s Alley on the day she died.
Layne recently stood in the No. 4 Supreme Court as Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell prepared to hear arguments on his sentence. State Counsel Paul Prescod appeared for the Crown, while Leslie Cargill-Straker spoke for the accused. Although doctors had already supplied a psychiatric profile and routine pre-jail documents, the bench was told that a trained psychologist still had to interview Layne. Cargill-Straker pressed for a deferral so the examination could take place. The justice agreed to resume on 25 September.
