A law-enforcement employee in Nassau has been arrested for homicide after firing on a Florida-born utility worker during a dispute that began inside a commercial building and ended on West Bay Street.

A Nassau-based law-enforcement employee who was off the clock has been placed under arrest and accused of taking a life after discharging his firearm at a foreign labourer during a fracas near a commercial strip.

The episode unfolded on March 21 of this year along West Bay Street. A spokesperson for the island's constabulary confirmed that the shooting victim was an American national. The force's own account states that the officer in question was present at the premises when a quarrel broke out within the building. The argument soon spilled onto the pavement outside, at which point one of those involved got into a car and, according to the official narrative, steered it aggressively in the direction of the officer.

Faced with what he perceived as a lethal threat, the agent drew his issued pistol and opened fire on the person behind the wheel. The motorist was struck and later succumbed.

Days afterward, the force disclosed that the shooter had been taken into custody and formally charged with murder.

Local newspapers have identified the fallen man as Cody Castillo, originally from Crawfordville in the Florida panhandle. He had travelled to the archipelago to work as an overhead-cable technician for an American electrical contractor. A fundraising page created by well-wishers stated that Castillo perished in what it termed "senseless violence," adding that his partner Makayla is carrying their first child.

The killing has prompted statements from senior figures in the Bahamian administration, including Prime Minister Philip Davis and the country's Washington envoy, Herschel Walker. American diplomatic officials have also acknowledged the loss of a citizen overseas.

Constabulary investigators are continuing to piece together exactly how the dispute escalated to lethal violence.
