Missing Michigan woman on Bahamas case upgraded to possible murder inquiry

Husband's statements do not align with GPS data

According to patch.com, American authorities have upgraded the missing persons case of Lynette Hooker, a woman from Michigan, to a possible murder inquiry. Hooker has been missing since 4 April, after her husband Brian Hooker stated that she had fallen overboard during a trip on a small motorboat heading to Elbow Cay in the Bahamas.

Brian Hooker was detained and questioned by Bahamian police on 8 April. He was released on 13 April without any charges being filed.

However, investigators contend that his statements do not align with the GPS data extracted from his devices. Based on this new evidence, American officials have been granted permission to search new areas, including the Abaco Sea, where divers are searching for Lynette's body.

Investigators also visited the Abaco Inn, the last place where Lynette was seen alive.

Brian attributed the incident to bad weather and stated that he lost sight of her when she was swept away by the sea current. He said he will not stop searching and referred to accounts of people who have survived in the water for weeks following a similar incident. According to a report from NBC News, Brian has since left the Bahamas to care for his seriously ill mother.

The couple had been married for more than twenty years and shared their sailing trips through the Caribbean on their joint Facebook page "Sailing Hookers". In 2023 they posted videos of purchasing a sailboat called Soul Mate in the coastal town of Rockport, Texas, followed by a cruise through the Gulf of Mexico from the port town of Kemah, Texas.
