A 45-year-old Huntsville, Ontario woman has been charged with fraud after allegedly attempting to deposit a fraudulent cheque belonging to a 101-year-old local resident, globalnews.ca reports.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers were called to a Huntsville bank on May 21 following reports of a suspected fraud. Investigators allege the woman attempted to deposit a cheque believed to be fraudulent, which was later determined to belong to the elderly Huntsville resident.

On June 2, OPP charged the woman with fraud under $5,000 and obtaining by false pretense. She is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on July 21.

Police are urging the public to remain vigilant against fraud and to report any suspicious activity to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
