B.C. Residents Detained in FBI-Led Probe Targeting Narcotics Smuggling
Law enforcement in British Columbia apprehended three individuals this week who now face potential transfer to American jurisdiction over accusations of involvement in a large-scale narcotics operation.
Officers with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police took Jaskarn Baghri from Surrey, Ravinder Dhanda from White Rock and Gurtej Singh Smagh from Creston into custody on Tuesday. The action came through collaboration between Canadian and American agencies probing criminal organizations with origins in South Asia.
The defendants made their initial appearance before a provincial judge this week. One participated remotely through video conference while the other two were present in the courtroom. Two of the accused have secured legal counsel, though one had not yet retained representation.
American investigators allege the group formed part of a network that regularly moved significant quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine between the two countries. The broader enforcement effort, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has named 37 individuals across several continents in connection with the scheme. Roughly two dozen have been taken into custody to date.
Judicial restrictions prevent publication of specific details regarding the transfer proceedings.
