A male suspect was shot and killed by a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer in the town of Brooks on Wednesday, and Alberta’s police oversight body has opened a review of the incident.

The chain of events began shortly after 4 p.m. when Brooks RCMP arrived at a residence in Greenbrook Village, a local trailer park, to carry out an arrest warrant. After police knocked, the occupant tried to run away.

A struggle followed during the escape attempt. Authorities allege the man drew a weapon, at which point an officer shot him.

Although police administered immediate medical aid, the individual was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at the location. ASIRT has assumed responsibility for the inquiry.
