Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that Arif Jhuman was located and detained by Colombian law enforcement in Medellín. He had been unlawfully at large since January 24, 2023.
Court records show Jhuman is currently serving a prison term of nine years and eleven months for several narcotics-related convictions. These include possessing controlled substances with intent to distribute, actual trafficking of Schedule I or II drugs, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
The arrest represents a significant breakthrough in an international manhunt that spanned multiple countries. Colombian police carried out the apprehension, though details about how they located the fugitive after such an extended period have not been disclosed.
Jhuman now faces extradition or deportation proceedings to return him to Canadian custody to complete his sentence. The case highlights ongoing cooperation between Canadian and Colombian authorities in tracking down offenders who flee across borders.
