Cape Breton fugitive arrested after stolen truck stopped by spike belt on Highway 105

Parole violator caught after high-speed flight and spike belt on Cape Breton highway

A Cape Breton man who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violations has been taken into custody following a series of events on Highway 105 on June 11, saltwire.com reports.

Dylan Edwards, 29, of North Sydney, came to the attention of Inverness County District RCMP after a black Chevrolet Silverado was reported stolen in Middle River at around 1:35 p.m. An officer spotted the truck travelling at high speed on Highway 105 near Baddeck but chose not to pursue it out of concern for public safety.

Approximately 40 minutes later, at around 2:15 p.m., an officer with RCMP Northeast Traffic Services – Cape Breton observed the same truck on Highway 105 in Boularderie East. The officer activated emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the truck sped away. Again, officers held back for public safety reasons.

Shortly afterward, an officer deployed a spike belt further along the highway. The truck drove over it, deflating all four tires. The driver pulled off onto Hillside Boularderie Road and fled on foot. With assistance from multiple witnesses, officers located and arrested the driver safely.

Edwards now faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime, flight from a peace officer, obstructing justice, and driving while prohibited in connection with the incident. He has been remanded into custody.
