A heavy-vehicle operator from Brampton, found responsible for sneaking $7.5-million in controlled substances into the country, has seemingly disappeared overseas. This happened after magistrates declined prosecutors' pleas to lock him up while his conviction was challenged.

Court officers had pressed to withdraw the man's conditional liberty. When that plea failed, the individual stopped showing up and is now suspected of having slipped past border controls, reports unpublished.ca.

The original conviction stemmed from a major seizure of illicit cargo. With the appeal still pending, the Crown warned that releasing the offender created a danger he would run. That warning now appears to have been borne out.

No details have been released about possible extradition steps or where the fugitive might presently be located.
