The trial of former Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Claude Doiron commenced today at the Percé courthouse, Le Nord-Côtier reports.

The 63-year-old man faces three charges: sexual assault, sexual touching, and incitement to sexual touching involving a person under 14 years of age. The alleged incidents occurred between May 1 and September 30, 1988, in Cloridorme, Gaspésie.

After addressing procedural matters, the Crown called two witnesses on the opening day: a Sûreté du Québec cybercrime investigator and the complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban.

The defence intends to call seven witnesses during the two-week trial, which is being heard by Judge Pierre Lortie sitting alone. The court does not anticipate rendering a decision from the bench and expects a verdict in October.

Claude Doiron was arrested in Quebec City in June 2023, shortly before his retirement. The former spokesperson was not employed by the Sûreté du Québec at the time of the alleged events.
