Gunfire broke out Saturday at Canada's biggest open-air salsa celebration in Toronto, leaving two individuals dead and four more hurt. Municipal law enforcement shared the news via a post on X.

Responding officers discovered half a dozen people struck by bullets. Medical personnel declared two of them dead at the scene. Investigators characterized what happened as a confrontation where two people fired at one another.

The violence unfolded near the Salsa on St. Clair gathering, an annual Latino cultural event held outdoors for 22 years running. Images aired by CTV captured attendees scattering along sidewalks while a heavy contingent of police cruisers, armored trucks, patrol vehicles and emergency medical units sped toward the cordoned-off zone. Authorities established control of the site roughly sixty minutes after the first shots.

Toronto's mayor, Olivia Chow, issued a statement on X describing the episode as a cowardly and thoughtless act of violence carried out amid a dense crowd. She promised the municipal police department would receive every resource needed to track down those accountable, adding that officials would maintain relentless efforts to clear firearms from city streets.

No information has been made public regarding the identity of the shooter or shooters, who remain fugitives.

The deadly incident follows closely on the heels of another fatal shooting in Montreal in late June, in which a civilian and a member of the police force lost their lives before officers killed the perpetrator.
