Ex-CFO charged with embezzlement and immigration fraud at Maccaferri's Canadian unit

Former Maccaferri CFO faces federal indictment over fraud and immigration scheme
A former chief financial officer has been indicted on charges of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and possession of a perjured immigration document, cp24.com reports, citing a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland.
Teresa Desy Majo, 42, served as CFO of the North American units of Officine Maccaferri S.p.A., an Italy-based multinational civil engineering firm headquartered in Bologna. The indictment covers both Maccaferri Canada and Maccaferri USA, subsidiaries that design and manufacture products for the global construction industry.
Prosecutors allege the scheme began in January 2021 and continued through May 2024. During that period, Majo allegedly modified emails belonging to other Maccaferri executives to fraudulently authorize employment benefits and compensation for herself.
"The former CFO used multiple Maccaferri executives' identities to fraudulently approve alleged employment benefits and compensation to enrich herself," the U.S. Attorney's Office stated in the release.
She then submitted the altered documents to the payroll departments of both Maccaferri Canada and Maccaferri USA, according to the indictment.
Authorities further allege that after being dismissed from her position, Majo concealed her termination from immigration officials and "lied to" them in order to obtain legal permanent resident status in the United States. Majo is an Italian national and resides in Annadale, Virginia.
The U.S. Attorney's Office noted in its release that individuals charged by indictment are "presumed innocent" unless found guilty at a criminal proceeding. The charges have not been tested in court.
Officine Maccaferri S.p.A., Maccaferri USA and Maccaferri Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CTVNews.ca.
