Edmonton Woman Killed by Calgary Police After Highway Standoff
Officers in Calgary opened fire on a 53-year-old motorist from Edmonton, resulting in her death following a standoff on Deerfoot Trail on June 21. Authorities had received multiple reports about a vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner throughout the preceding day.
Members of the Calgary Police Service managed to block the woman's car on the northbound lanes between Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue Northeast. Video recordings show officers using chemical irritants to try to compel her to exit the automobile and comply with their directions.
The driver eventually left her vehicle and approached the officers while clutching an unidentified item. According to an initial report by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), police discharged an electroshock weapon and less-lethal projectiles. One officer also used a long gun. Investigators are still working to establish the precise sequence of actions.
Emergency personnel rushed her to a medical facility with grave injuries, where she later passed away.
Adam Vaananen, who had previously been in a relationship with the deceased, told Global News that he had alerted officials to her struggles with psychological well-being. He insisted she posed no threat of violence and had no intentions of self-harm. Vaananen, their teenage son, and the woman's sister-in-law portrayed her as a devoted parent known for her warmth in the kitchen and her lively personality.
Relatives have organized an online fundraiser to manage legal matters tied to her estate and to finance funeral arrangements. They are also urging policymakers to use the findings from the ongoing probe to implement reforms that could avert comparable fatalities.
ASIRT continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
