Former BC prison guard Naila Sheikh surrenders on fraud and breach of trust charges

Global News Crime reports that Naila Sheikh, a former guard at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam, turned herself in to police on Monday morning, weeks after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She has since been released on conditions, and her first court appearance is expected next week.

Sheikh faces three criminal charges: identity fraud, breach of trust, and unauthorized use of a computer. She previously worked as a correctional officer at the North Fraser Correctional Service facility.

Global News Crime has learned that Sheikh served as the case manager for Rabih Alkhalil, a convicted killer who escaped from the same institution in July 2022. Alkhalil broke out with the help of two men posing as contractors. Whether Sheikh's charges are connected to that escape remains unknown.

At the time of his escape, Alkhalil was standing trial for the 2012 murder of a rival gangster at Vancouver's Wall Centre. He was subsequently convicted in absentia. After more than three years as one of Canada's most wanted fugitives, he was tracked down and arrested in Qatar in September 2025 under an alias. He remains overseas, as Canada has no official extradition treaty with Qatar.

Sheikh's lawyer, Gagan Nahal, tells Global News Crime he has requested disclosure from Crown prosecutors but has not yet received any evidence. He said he cannot comment at this stage on whether there is any link between his client's charges and Alkhalil's escape.

Nahal recently secured a favourable outcome in a related case. Last week, former correctional officer Ramandeep Rai received a two-year conditional sentence to be served in the community after pleading guilty to breach of trust. Rai had failed to report that an inmate with whom she was in a romantic relationship possessed a cellphone.
