Gatineau officer arrested for alleged off-duty assault, second time charged

A Gatineau, Que., police officer has been charged with assault following an off-duty incident, ca.news.yahoo.com reports.

Stéphane Lizotte was taken into custody on Sunday by the neighbouring MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais police force. Gatineau police confirmed the arrest on Wednesday.

Lizotte faces a charge of "assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm." The alleged incident took place while he was off duty, according to Gatineau police.

This is not Lizotte's first encounter with criminal charges. In 2023, Gatineau police announced that Lizotte had been charged with obstructing or resisting peace officers and uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death. He had since been suspended with pay in connection with those earlier charges.

The 2023 case arose after officers responded to a report of an intoxicated person, identified that person as Lizotte, and drove him home without laying charges. Gatineau police said "the situation deteriorated" when officers subsequently attempted to check his residence for firearms.

Following a court appearance on Monday, Lizotte was released from custody under conditions, Gatineau police said.
