Toronto police officer killed during gun raid linked to U.S. consulate shooting

A Toronto Police Service officer died after being shot during an operation in North York early Thursday morning.

Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was part of the Emergency Task Force executing a search warrant for firearms and narcotics when an exchange of gunfire occurred. The incident took place near Trethewey Drive and Black Creek Drive.

Nicholas Bennett, 19, from Toronto, was critically injured during the confrontation and is expected to face a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the officer's death.

Police are also searching for a second individual, Zara Jabbi, also 19. Jabbi is wanted in connection with a March shooting incident at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto and is considered armed and dangerous.

According to law enforcement sources, one of the suspects had previously been released on bail following an earlier shooting matter. The same individual is believed to be responsible for the gunfire at the U.S. Consulate.

The location of Pinizzotto's death is near the site where Constable Todd Baylis was fatally shot while on patrol in June 1994. Baylis was killed by Clinton Gayle, a man who had been ordered deported two years earlier but remained in Canada.
