Youth apologizes at sentencing for fatal stabbing of Ontario senior
A teenager convicted of killing an elderly woman in Pickering, Ontario, expressed remorse during his sentencing hearing in an Oshawa courtroom.
The 15-year-old, whose identity is shielded by a publication ban, admitted guilt to first-degree murder in April. Court records show that on May 29, 2025, he approached 83-year-old Eleanor Doney while she worked in her front yard. Following a short conversation, he attacked her with a knife. Doney tried to run away, but he caught up and stabbed her again. A wound to her neck proved fatal.
At the hearing, the youth read from a handwritten statement. He said he understood the gravity of what he had done and expressed sorrow for his actions. He also spoke of wanting to become a better person.
Crown prosecutor Tammy D'Eri presented evidence that the offender remains fixated on violent themes and notorious murderers. She described an occasion where he remarked to detention staff that he had not experienced such intensity since the killing. D'Eri also cited instances of the teen carrying blades to school and issuing menacing comments to fellow students.
Both the prosecution and defence agree the maximum penalty under youth law is appropriate: six years in a secure facility plus four years under community supervision. They dispute whether his 13 months in pre-trial detention should reduce the custodial portion.
Prosecutors originally intended to pursue an adult sentence. They abandoned this plan after a recent Supreme Court decision altered the standard for such transfers. The Crown determined it could not demonstrate that the accused possessed the reasoning capacity of a grown person when the crime occurred.
Doney had spent her career teaching kindergarten. She had been married for over six decades and was looking after her husband at the time of her death.
