Authorities in Waterloo Region have detained a man suspected of chauffeuring unwitting drug couriers for a criminal syndicate that preyed on job-seeking youth.

Alexander Kwan, 36, faces two counts tied to narcotics possession with intent to distribute and export. Officers raided a Markham residence on June 11 and apprehended him days later, CTV News reported.

The case emerged from a W5 probe into what investigators call the "dot network" — a trafficking ring whose mastermind hides behind a single punctuation mark as an online alias. Recruiters allegedly posted fake courier positions, then dispatched unsuspecting applicants overseas with luggage packed with illicit substances.

Among those ensnared was a teenager from Cambridge, Ontario, referred to as Jade. Hong Kong border agents stopped her last autumn and found roughly 25 kilograms of white powder in her bags. She has languished in a foreign cell since, allowed scant contact with relatives back home.

Another young Ontarian, a 21-year-old man called Omar, met the same fate. Chat records reviewed by journalists revealed several recruiters operating from the same southern Ontario area as their victims.

Jade's mother, Naderia, welcomed Kwan's detention, saying it bolsters her daughter's claim of innocence. She urged Ottawa to intervene with Hong Kong and secure the release of youths who were manipulated rather than complicit.

During a remote court appearance from Maplehurst Correctional Centre, Kwan confirmed his identity. His legal representative postponed bail arguments to a later date. The shadowy figure orchestrating the entire scheme remains at large.

Canada's foreign ministry acknowledged awareness of Jade's predicament and stated that consular support is being provided.
