A person was critically injured early Sunday after being struck by a driver reportedly engaged in street racing on Highway 401 in Mississauga.

The incident occurred around midnight in the westbound express lanes near Renforth Drive, just south of Toronto Pearson International Airport.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, two BMWs were racing in the area when one of the drivers hit a pedestrian who had pulled over on the shoulder to inspect a tractor-trailer load.

The victim was rushed to hospital with injuries considered life-threatening.

The driver who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene. However, the second vehicle involved in the alleged race did not stop and fled the area.

Police stated that charges are pending against the driver who hit the pedestrian. Investigators are working to identify the second vehicle and its driver.

As of late Sunday afternoon, the two left lanes of the westbound 401 near Renforth remained closed, causing delays in the area.
