Suspect Arrested in Killing of Missing Vancouver Island Senior

Law enforcement on the Pacific coast have jailed an individual in connection with the violent death of a pensioner whose corpse turned up near a burnt automobile.

Cameron Compton was picked up by Mounties on Monday and now stands accused of homicide plus desecration of a body, CBC reports.

The victim, Sherry Shelley, aged 65, had been reported absent during the final weeks of 2025. A lengthy probe by the Nanaimo detachment followed. Detectives eventually located the missing person's mortal remains at a site where a car had previously ignited, shifting the file from a disappearance to a slaying inquiry.

With the defendant already locked up, prosecutors have laid a count of murder in the second degree alongside an allegation that he abused a dead body. A court hearing is slated for Tuesday.

Officials are keeping silent on extra elements of the file.
