Ottawa police say Gibriil Bakal, wanted for a 2024 homicide in Little Italy, was caught in Türkiye after a biometric check matched an Interpol Red Notice.

A man wanted for a fatal shooting in Ottawa's Little Italy neighbourhood has been arrested in Türkiye, cp24.com reports.

Jama Roble, 33, was shot on Champagne Avenue South on January 29, 2024, and later died in hospital. Gibriil Bakal, 31, was subsequently sought on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the killing.

According to an Ottawa Police Service news release, Bakal was detained after a biometric fingerprint check at a Turkish border crossing matched him to an Interpol Red Notice. At the time of his arrest, Bakal ranked 19th on the Bolo Program's Canada's most wanted list.

"The Ottawa Police Service would like to thank its policing and justice partners for their assistance, as well as the Bolo Program for helping amplify the wanted notice nationally," Ottawa police said.

Bakal appeared in court on Saturday.
