Stolen truck leads to arrest of parolee on Canada-wide warrant in Cape Breton

Spike belt stops fleeing suspect wanted on Canada-wide warrant

A 29-year-old man already wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violations now faces additional criminal charges after a stolen pickup truck was brought to a halt on Highway 105 in Cape Breton, waterfrontmediahfx.the902hxir.ca reports.

At approximately 1:35 p.m. on June 11, Inverness County District RCMP received a report that a truck had just been stolen from Middle River. A responding officer spotted the black Chevrolet Silverado travelling at high speed on Hwy. 105 near Baddeck but did not give chase, citing public safety concerns.

Around 2:15 p.m., an officer with RCMP Northeast Traffic Services – Cape Breton observed the same Silverado on Hwy. 105 in Boularderie East. The officer activated emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle. The truck again accelerated and fled. The officer again declined to pursue out of concern for public safety.

An officer then deployed a spike belt further along the highway. The Silverado drove over it, deflating all four tires. The driver pulled off onto Hillside Boularderie Rd. and fled on foot. With the assistance of multiple witnesses, an officer located and safely arrested the driver shortly afterward.

The driver was identified as Dylan Edwards of North Sydney. Edwards had been wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violations. He now faces charges of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Flight from Peace Officer, Obstructing Justice, and Driving While Prohibited. He was remanded into custody.

The RCMP thanked members of the public and the Cape Breton Regional Police Service for their assistance.

Suspicious death in Kings County confirmed as homicide

In a separate matter, the Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit (SWN MCU) has confirmed that a suspicious death in Greenfield, Kings County, is being treated as a homicide.

At approximately 3:50 a.m. on June 11, Kings District RCMP responded to a report of a deceased man found outside a residence on Peck Meadow Rd. The death was considered suspicious from the outset, and the SWN MCU assumed carriage of the investigation.

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service has since determined the manner of death to be homicide.

Officers arrested one person on June 11 in connection with the incident. That individual was subsequently released without charges. Evidence gathered to date indicates the incident was targeted in nature.
