Montréal: Woman Pushed from Balcony on New Year's Day Dies from Injuries

According to lapresse.ca, the 31-year-old woman pushed from the balcony of a building on Sainte-Catherine Street Thursday morning died from her injuries Monday evening at the hospital.

"This is therefore Montréal's first murder to occur on its territory in 2026," declared Manuel Couture, spokesperson for the Montréal Police Service (SPVM).

The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. near Jeanne-d'Arc Avenue in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. Witnesses told the SPVM that an altercation had escalated on the third-floor balcony between the victim and the suspect, a 31-year-old man, who allegedly pushed her into the void. The woman was found on the ground on Sainte-Catherine Street.

The man, arrested at the scene by police Thursday, faced an accusation of aggravated assault as of Friday. This accusation is expected to be reviewed in light of the victim's death.
