Molotov cocktail thrown through house window in North Vancouver: family targeted by mistaken identity?

An incendiary bottle was thrown through the window of a residence in North Vancouver on Tuesday evening whilst a young family was inside. The RCMP is investigating a possible case of mistaken identity.

Global News Crime reports that a Molotov cocktail was thrown through the window of a quadruplex in North Vancouver on Tuesday evening whilst a young family was inside.

The father was sitting on a sofa, very close to the window, moments before the burning bottle was thrown from outside. He had just stood up to go into another room when the impact occurred.

The family heard a violent crash. The mother spotted the window on fire and glass shards on the windowsill. A neighbour, whose identity has not been disclosed for security reasons, reacted immediately.

"I heard my neighbours shouting and it was obvious something had happened at their place… I ran downstairs to help them as quickly as possible," he said.

"I grabbed the garden hose from the side of the house, I put out the fire and there was a bottle stuck in the window. There could have been a major fire; someone could have been injured, killed, who knows."

Corporal Mansoor Sahak of the North Vancouver RCMP stated that officers are reviewing video recordings and interviewing neighbours and witnesses.

"This is clearly a frightening situation for the family and residents," he said, noting that the victim services unit is providing support to the family.

The family, whose identity is protected for security reasons, say they do not understand why someone would want to harm them. They believe they are victims of mistaken identity. The RCMP states that it is too early to determine whether the incident was targeted or random.
