A 66-year-old repeat sexual offender was detained in Hamilton, Ontario, on Tuesday after leaving Montreal where he had been under federal watch. Christopher Watts had become the target of a warrant when he broke rules linked to his long-term supervision arrangement.

Federal corrections staff informed Montreal police that the Halton Regional Police Service had taken Watts into custody. The Montreal force had been helping federal authorities locate the man following reports that he had failed to follow the terms of his release.

Watts had been in the Montreal area at the time he stopped complying with his supervision conditions. The Montreal police unit responsible for monitoring sexual offenders had issued a public request for tips to help find him.

The individual had earlier been found guilty in the 2001 death of a 13-year-old girl. He completed a 12-year prison term for manslaughter, sexual assault, and sexual interference. Upon finishing that sentence, he was placed under a long-term supervision order that has been suspended repeatedly over the years because of ongoing violations.
