A shooting erupted during a street festival in Toronto, leaving at least two people dead and six others wounded by gunfire, according to local police and Canadian media.

Toronto police initially reported five people with gunshot injuries and two fatalities at the scene. They later updated the number of wounded to six. The suspected shooter remains at large, authorities announced on social media platform X.

The incident occurred on a street where a Latin American dance festival was underway, CTV News reported. Police have not released any description of the possible gunman.

Journalist Joanna Lavoie of CP24 was at the festival with friends when the shooting began. "People are terrified," she said. "We were dancing." She described how the atmosphere shifted dramatically after the gunfire. "I'm a bit shaken," she added, noting that the festival effectively ended and police were urging attendees to go home.

The two-day festival typically draws tens of thousands of visitors, according to organizers.

A large number of officers remain at the scene continuing the investigation, AFP reported citing its correspondent on the ground.

The shooting comes just one month after a separate incident in Montreal where three people were killed, including a police officer, a civilian, and the suspect. Two other officers and a civilian were injured in that case.
