A motorist whose vehicle struck two people waiting at a Surrey bus shelter — killing a young father — will not return to custody. A provincial court judge instead ordered probation, a temporary licence suspension, and a monetary penalty.

Michael Gordon Bovencamp, who turned 45 last year, appeared in court on Friday. He entered a guilty plea to a Motor Vehicle Act infraction connected to the October 5, 2024, incident near 144 Street and Hyland Drive.

That afternoon, Bovencamp's Ford F350 pickup was heading north on 144 Street when it veered into opposing lanes and slammed into the bus stop. One pedestrian, 33-year-old Saraj Singh, died at the scene. The second victim sustained severe trauma.

Singh had recently relocated from India with his wife, Nardeep Kaur, and their young son, seeking improved prospects. In a written statement, Kaur described her husband as tender, diligent, and devoted. She wrote that his abrupt, violent death shattered the future they had built, and that each day since has felt suffocating.

Bovencamp acknowledged using cannabis earlier that morning. Subsequent toxicology analysis, however, revealed THC concentrations marginally beneath the criminal impairment threshold, with no evidence of intoxicated operation. Court testimony suggested a probable medical episode while driving.

The sentence handed down includes an eighteen-month probationary period, a twelve-month driving ban, and a $1,500 fine.
