Norwegian Police Tip Leads to 25-Year Sentence for Canadian Child Abuser
A 38-year-old man in Canada who worked as a foster parent and ran a daycare has been handed a 25-year prison term for sexually abusing children, following a breakthrough by law enforcement in Norway, Aftenposten reports.
Police in Lillestrøm, conducting an unrelated inquiry in the Romerike area, uncovered chat messages, photographs, and video recordings that revealed abuse being carried out by an individual residing in Canada. Working alongside Norway's National Criminal Investigation Service, local detectives identified the suspect and passed the information to Canadian authorities.
When officers in Canada moved in to search the man's residence, they removed six children from the premises. The convicted individual had been caring for three foster children and operating a childcare facility at the time of his apprehension.
He was found guilty of sexually assaulting two children and of producing and distributing abusive material involving two of his foster children. During sentencing, Judge Patrick Sullivan stated that the offender had exploited and violated some of the most vulnerable victims imaginable in deeply reprehensible ways. Sullivan noted that the children's young age would have made it difficult, if not impossible, for them to comprehend, resist, or report what was happening.
Separately, a man from Romerike has been charged with facilitating the online sexual assault of one of the foster children. His trial is expected to take place in the autumn.
