According to halifax.citynews.ca, Newfoundland and Labrador's police oversight body has laid a weapons charge against an on-duty Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer.

The province's Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT-NL) charged the officer with careless storage of a firearm, ammunition, and a prohibited weapon. The charge stems from an incident that took place in November in Corner Brook, a city in western Newfoundland.

A news release posted Friday to the agency's website confirmed the officer is scheduled to appear in court in July. SIRT-NL provided no further details about the circumstances of the incident.

SIRT-NL is the provincial body responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police, including cases of injury, death, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
