Ottawa Father Killed Two Sons Before Arson and Suicide, Police Say
A 40-year-old dentist in Ottawa fatally attacked his two young children before setting fire to his professional office and ending his own life, according to investigators.
Mohammed Al-Lami killed the seven- and twelve-year-old boys inside his residence in the city's south end on June 29, Yahoo News Canada reports. Authorities say the man then ignited his clinic in a nearby community before dying by suicide.
At the time of the slayings, the father was serving an active probation term. He had been accused in 2024 of sending menacing electronic messages in which he threatened to hurt his former spouse and her new companion.
Law enforcement updated the chronology this week, stating that Al-Lami collected the siblings on the afternoon of June 27 for a court-arranged visit. Detectives believe he ended their lives sometime between the night of June 28 and dawn on June 29. The victims were last confirmed alive on the Sunday evening.
A handwritten message discovered at the residence showed the perpetrator venting anger toward his ex-wife and expressing grievances against both the criminal and family-law judicial structures, which he claimed had treated him unfairly.
Investigators identified an ongoing dispute over child-access schedules and monetary support as background factors. At the mother's request, police are withholding the names of the deceased siblings.
